Dr. Sarel Botha, DMD

Dr. Sarel J.P. Botha, DMD, MChD (OMFS), BChD, MBChB, MBA, is a dual-qualified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with more than a decade of specialist-level clinical experience spanning oral and maxillofacial surgery, head and neck oncology, trauma surgery, healthcare leadership, and academic medicine.

Dr. Botha completed his medical degree (MBChB) at the University of Pretoria before pursuing advanced dental and surgical training. He subsequently earned a Diploma in Oral Surgery, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BChD) with distinction, and a Master of Dentistry in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (MChD) from the University of Pretoria. During his dental training, he received numerous academic distinctions, including the Brooklyn Surgical Centre Award as Dux Student in Clinical Dentistry, awards for outstanding academic achievement in Periodontology, Orthodontics, and Removable Prosthodontics, and the South African Dental Association Prize for Outstanding Leadership. He later completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA), providing a strong foundation in healthcare management and organizational leadership.

To further advance his clinical expertise in the United States, Dr. Botha completed the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) Advanced Standing Program at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry, graduating with a GPA of 3.9. During his training at Temple, he was selected for membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU), the national dental honor society, recognizing exceptional academic achievement and professional excellence among the top dental graduates in the United States.

Dr. Botha is internationally recognized for his expertise in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a Fellow of the College of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeons of South Africa (FCMFOS), a Fellow of the International Board for Certification of Specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (FIBCSOMS), and a Fellow of the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncological Societies (IFHNOS). These distinctions reflect advanced specialist training and recognition by leading international professional organizations.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Botha has treated more than 12,000 patients and performed over 8,000 surgical procedures, including complex dentoalveolar surgery, facial trauma reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, pathology management, craniofacial procedures, head and neck oncologic surgery, and advanced reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Botha has also made significant contributions to academic medicine. He served as Faculty Member in Head and Neck Oncology within the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pretoria, where he trained and mentored postgraduate residents and supervised numerous research projects. He has held multiple leadership positions within the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, including elected Secretary and Senator, helping shape national specialist training standards, examination processes, and educational policy.

An accomplished researcher and scholar, Dr. Botha has authored approximately fifteen peer-reviewed scientific publications, which have collectively received more than 265 citations. His research has focused on craniofacial anomalies, head and neck oncology, reconstructive surgery, additive manufacturing technologies, and surgical education. He has presented his work nationally and internationally. He also serves as a peer reviewer for several internationally recognized surgical and medical journals.
